Binondo Food Trip with Kalesa Tour

My father lived and stayed in Binondo during his college days since he is a working student. He works for a Chinese man who treated him like one of his sons. He helps in their distribution business of fresh fish to Manila market.

My vivid memory of Binondo as a young child was going up to the Binondo building high stairs to visit this Chinese family. The first chinese words I learned are the Chinese numbers below which I love to recite repetitively during gradeschool.

1 - it
2 - nung
3 - sa
4 - si
5 - go
6 - lak
7 - tsit
8 - pwe
9 - kaw
10 - tsup
100 - pa

My parents could still recall that as a toddler, I stole an apple in one of the Binondo fruit stands but they pay for it eventually. They often repeat this story until now.😅

This January 2026, I got a sudden invite to visit Binondo for a food trip and ride MRT/LRT trains again. It's a nice experience again to commute since most of the time I usually ride only bus or grab/indrive. I was an MRT commuter back during college days, from MRT Ayala to MRT Quezon Avenue. I was able to commute MRT and pay via gcash commute. Going back to Manila area like Carriedo is also a new experience for me since my working hub is in Bonificio Global City (BGC).

It is my first time to ride kalesa from MRT Carriedo to Binondo for experience. You will have a good top view of the binondo streets.

Our agenda is to eat on one of the top 3 chinese restaurants in Binondo based on chatgpt. Our foot led us to Wai Ying Restaurant. We queued for more than an hour but it is worth it. What I love best is their dimsung curry beef siomai and noodles.

Other places we visit are the feng shui and charms stores in Binondo. A must stop for pasalubong is the Eng Bee Tin hopia. Binondo was crowded at that time since it is a good tourist spot for food trips and for foreigners. Hope to visit back again and try other old chinese restaurants.💓
